Facelift Vs. Neck Lift: Which is Better? Can I Get Both?

June 28, 2018 / by Dr. Brian Dorner

These days, with the wide range of surgical options available, it can be somewhat difficult to determine which plastic surgery procedure might be right for you. Both facelifts and neck lifts can be customized to meet a patients’ individual goals and needs. Perhaps that’s why many of the men and women who walk through our door just aren’t sure which is better for them.

While each surgery addresses similar concerns such as lax skin, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and weak muscles, they’re actually very different. Today, we’ll take a closer look at both procedures to help jump-start the decision-making process and give you a clear direction about where to start.

Lower Facelift

Of all the various types of facelifts, it’s the lower facelift that often gets confused with a neck lift. This procedure corrects moderate to severe signs of aging through an easily-concealable incision made behind the ear. Loose, sagging skin is pulled upwards on the face to address marionette lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose. Muscles are tightened and lifted in the cheek area, and fat deposits are repositioned giving you an overall well-rested appearance.

A lower facelift alone can make you look 6 to 8 years younger. Although a facelift cannot stop the natural aging process, results can last for decades. Men and women of all ages can benefit from an instantly smoother, younger-looking complexion.

Try this at home: Place your fingers at the top of your cheekbones and push your skin upward and back. This will help you mimic the look you’ll get from a facelift.

Neck Lift

Neck lifts are designed to address loose neck skin (turkey waddle), excess fat below the chin (double chin), and vertical neck bands. Rather than pulling the skin upward like a facelift, neck lifts pull the skin downward and taut. Unwanted fat pockets and excess skin are removed while underlying muscles are tightened.

A neck lift can reverse common signs of aging and help patients shave 10-15 years off their appearance. Results are long-lasting and can greatly improve the profile.

Try this at home: Place your forefingers below the jawline, outside your jaw and push downward and back. Doing so can give you an idea about what a neck lift can do for you.

Combination Procedures

Aging doesn’t just happen to one area of our body at a time. In some cases, Dr. Dorner may suggest a combination procedure for patients who would like a more dramatic outcome. Having both procedures done at the same time can cut down on facility fee costs as well recovery time. At the time of your in-person consultation, Dr. Dorner will help create an individualized treatment plan to meet your aesthetic goals.
