Who Should Consider Breast Revision?

If you have any issues with your breast implants, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Dorner to understand your options and discuss a revision plan. The following are the most common concerns we handle at dorner BREAST.

Change Breast Size: If your original breast augmentation used implants that you now consider too large or too small, we can replace them with a new breast implant size.

Asymmetry: Asymmetry occurs when implants look uneven due to size discrepancies, drooping, or other conditions. After assessing the cause, Dr. Dorner corrects the issue and new implants are placed for a balanced look.

Correct Capsular Contracture: When the soft tissue around an implant hardens and thickens it creates scar tissue. While most augmentations involve some internal scarring, excessive scarring can shift implant placement. Breast revision can correct the resulting change in breast shape.

Symmastia: Symmastia occurs when breast tissue from both breasts merges across the intermammary cleft. In most cases, symmastia occurs because the implants are the wrong width, shape, or size and are too close together. Breast revision surgery will correct this condition by replacing your implants with ones that work with your body measurements.

Implant Rippling: Implant rippling usually occurs near the edge of the implant and can cause visible wrinkles beneath the skin. Often we can correct this by simply changing to a silicone implant.

Implant Rupture: If a saline implant ruptures it will quickly deflate causing a visible difference. On the other hand, a silicone implant rupture is only detected with an MRI. Implant ruptures are uncommon but they do require corrective surgery.

Bottoming Out: Bottoming out occurs when one or both breasts drop too low, often due to placement issues from the first surgery. Correction may involve a new placement strategy, tissue grafting, or creating a surgically secure pocket. Switching to a silicone implant often resolves the problem.

Essential Details

Results

You should begin to see your results once the swelling begins to disappear.

Pain

Each breast revision plan is unique, so the amount of pain you feel will vary based on your procedures.

Scars

Whenever possible, Dr. Dorner aims to utilize the same incision sites as your original breast augmentation. If this isn’t possible, he will strategically place new incisions where they are less conspicuous.

Anesthesia

Breast revisions are performed under general anesthesia.

Incision Location

Incision location varies depending on your revision needs. Common incision options for breast revision surgery include transaxillary (via the armpit), periareolar (along the lower edge of the areola), inframammary (under the breast fold), or TUBA (transumbilical, through the belly button).

Downtime

We recommend taking one week or less to return to work and limiting activity for 2-6 weeks depending on the placement of the implant (above or below the muscle).

Recovery

The recovery period varies based on the complexity of your surgery.
