About Hair Restoration with PRP

Hair thinning is a serious concern for many Columbus, OH patients. Whether it is caused by genetics, age, hormones, medical conditions, or from styling products or practices, current advancements and research in the hair restoration industry offer new effective procedures to combat the condition. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are an excellent nonsurgical option that is showing promising progress in slowing, stopping, and potentially reversing hair loss. PRP has shown results in individuals with alopecia areata, as well as thinning eyebrows. Dr. Brian Dorner of Dorner Plastic Surgery is one of only a small number of cosmetic surgeons to offer this innovative therapy in Columbus, OH. By combining a powerful solution of hair growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Dorner can help to strengthen the function of your hair, leading to thicker, longer, healthier locks.

Hair Restoration Candidates

Any healthy adult patient suffering from hair loss could be a candidate for hair restoration with PRP; however, those in the early stages of hair loss usually attain the most favorable results. PRP is best used for patients with androgenic alopecia, which is an inherited type of hair thinning that typically occurs on the top of the head. In women, this can sometimes appear as a widening part with normal hair density at the backside of the head. Those with parts of "poor quality" hair growth on the scalp with normally functioning hair follicles usually have the best results with PRP hair restoration.

Procedure Technique

Hair restoration with PRP is nonsurgical and only requires a short 60-minute, in-office visit. Before the treatment, we will collect a little bit of your blood in a vial and place it into a special machine called a centrifuge, which spins the blood at a high rate of speed to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. Afterward, a local or topical anesthetic will be applied to your scalp and allowed to soak in. Finally, the concentrated platelet-rich plasma is reintroduced via injection into parts of your scalp that are bald or thinning. Our protocol for nonsurgical hair restoration is highly customizable and can be repeated as needed and recommended by Dr. Dorner.

What to Expect

There's no downtime needed to recover from this treatment. Patients may develop some minor redness, swelling, or discomfort around the treated regions, but these symptoms will subside in the coming days. While results differ from one patient to the next, aesthetic results are typically noticed around 4 – 6 months after the initial treatment. Results often continue to improve up to a full year following therapy. Hair restoration with PRP is not a permanent solution for reversing hair loss so follow-up sessions are highly recommended every 12 – 18 months. It's important to note that PRP hair restoration doesn't create or establish new hair follicles. Conversely, the treatment reverses the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create fuller, healthier, longer hair fibers.
